As a follow-up to an earlier article entitled, How Do You Find The Value Of Your Antique Barber Chair?, this post takes on the subject of consulting a professional antique appraiser a bit more.
If you have an antique barber chair that you’d like to sell, but information on the furniture is hard to come by despite substantial research, consider having it appraised by an expert as a last resort. You will end up paying a considerable amount for the appraisal, but it should be well worth it if you believe that the chair you own has something of value.
An antique appraisal is also required for insurance, tax or loan purposes. For example, if you want your home insured along with the antique barber chair in your basement, the insurance firm will need to know the appraised value of the timeless item that’s being covered. Otherwise, it will be treated as any other or under a general policy.
Reputable appraisers make it a point that they are members of one or more of these professional appraisal organizations:
- International Society of Appraisers (ISA)
- American Association of Appraisers (AAA)
- Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP)
- Association of Online Appraisers (AOA)
Moreover, some are members of antique dealer associations within their state.
You should keep in mind that prices of antique items vary across different states. An appraiser who’s situated locally is likely to give you a more effective appraisal than a more well-known appraiser in a neighboring region.
There’s one notable site that offers appraisals with payments on a good faith basis. JustAnswer has a handful of Antique Experts who have decades of experience in dealing with a bunch of old stuff, including antique barber chairs. Many of these professionals are members of ISA, USPAP and/or AOA. One of them might be able to provide an adequate appraisal of your antique chair. I have a Koken Congress Barbers chair for sale and don’t know the value. It is Oak with leather seat and back no head rest. It has the metal foot rest x 2 no brakes in metal. I had the hydraulics serviced about 6 years ago and it still works fine. There is a strop attached by string. I have seen a picture of the same one on ebay but it was just a poster or something. They said it was an1880 model but I don’t know.

I have an extremely rare Paidar Barber Chair. It is smaller, but not a child chair. Someone researched it to be called a Youth chair. Very unique is the porcelain is lavender and the back has a U shape in the middle where the head rest goes in and yes we found the head rest. I have a Paidar chair that is wooden with leather upholstery. It has no hydraulics just reclines. Wood and leather in good shape. Handles on both sides and footrest are nickel plate. Hello, I’m trying to find a way to appraise two vintage barber chairs. There have been two owners; the original barber and my father. They are both Emil J. Paidar, manufactured in Chicago. I estimate them to be circa 1935. The both have porcelain bases, burgundy upholstery and one seat has been reupholstered. They both have headrests and one has the ashtray. I have photographs of each of them. I just can’t find anyone who has an idea of their worth. Anyone who buys them would have to invest in their restoration.
